Pitching Guidelines

Why We Pitch

Primarily we pitch as a way to introduce new and talented partners into the world of Netflix.

On occasion, we will pitch several already known partners to ensure that the title has the best chance of securing a winning idea.

What You Need To Know

Budget

Clarify the pitch fee offered for participation with your client before starting work. We recommend keeping an ongoing dialogue going in terms of how the pitch fee is spent and expectations around deliverables.

Idea Types

In many cases, ideas that mix various Netflix IPs or Netflix ‘brand’ ideas won’t be suitable for promoting a specific title (and can involve more teams such as Brand and Legal which slows down the process). In order to use your time as effectively as possible, we recommend clarifying with your client the kinds of ideas they are interested in.

Partnership

We prefer co-creating and bouncing ideas off along the way. Actively ask your client for an iterative process to present the best possible results.

Idea Ownership for Paid Pitches

If you do not yet have a signed MSA with us, you will be asked to sign a pitch agreement (ask your Netflix point of contact) which grants Netflix ownership of any ideas you present as part of the paid pitch.

Winning the Pitch

If you have a winning idea, we will work with you to ensure it is brought to life in the best possible way for Netflix. This could mean involving other production partners or internal team members to realise its full potential.

Questions To Ask Your Client

  1. Who is the core audience we are talking to? Often this can be outside traditional demographic boxes and into interests, behaviours, preferences etc.
  2. Is there any background, nuance, or challenge we should be aware of in your market?
  3. Is there any additional Netflix context in terms of initiatives, priorities, trends or current events that might help us address this brief?
  4. Who are the main stakeholders/decision makers? At what point should we expect each team to weigh in (e.g. planned showrunner meetings)
  5. Are there any talent considerations we should be aware of?
  6. How do you like to review ideas - see everything on the cutting room floor or just the top 2-3 concepts from our perspective?
  7. How much upfront strategy do you want to see before the ideas?
  8. Are you looking for just write-ups or composed assets as well?
  9. Should we be thinking about production realities at this stage?
  10. If so, Is there a ballpark production number we should be aiming to hit?
  11. How do you envision this idea living in the world (Netflix owned channels, PR/earned channels, a microsite or app, an OOH board?)
  12. Are there channels we definitely shouldn’t expect (an event, or a dedicated Instagram handle, for example?)
  13. To what extent should the Netflix brand show up, is there brand positioning that needs to come through in the idea?
  14. Are you expecting rounds of revisions? How does that fit in with the budget?
  15. We’re running out of funds, where should we focus our time from here?
